Great article, Connie. This is one of the most mis-understood areas of employment management. The DOL and IRS are very clear about the penalties for mis-classification--lots of $$$.

Thanks for alerting your readers to the risks in this practice.

Great message. If small business, or any business, would stop doing some of those "this is the way we have always done it" things, success would follow very quickly. Good advice, Connie.

Thanks for the feedback. I think we are on the same page. My intent of the post was to refute what Ad Age ran as a cover story last week. They said "it has become Passe to be an agency" and that agencies now want to be called consulting. My point is that Agency is not what is passe but the word Advertising has. As you stated in your post, today's agency does a lot more than just traditional advertising and are therefore communications agencies.

Thanks again for the feedback!
What a marvelous post! I am just a beginner in community management/marketing media and trying to learn how to do it well - resources like this blog are quite helpful. As our company is based in the US, it's all a bit new to us. The example above is something that I worry about as well, how to show your own real enthusiasm and share the fact that your product is beneficial in that case.
